This is a dual post.
I feel like a yo-yo on Life Mate. The reason I’d like it to be under Ruth is because this is a great book. One of the best, in my opinion, that I’ve written (well, I’m still writing it), but I am completely in love with it and the characters, esp. my sweet beta hero. You know me. I don’t do alpha males well. I think Nathan in What Nathan Wants and Jake Mitchell from An Inconvenient Marriage were the only alpha males I did. I typically do the beta heroes. Soft and tender and sweet. Chris, the hero in Life Mate, fits the bill so well. I do adore him, and I love the storyline. I love it all so much I want to share this story with all of my readers under my real name. This is the driving force for me wanting to convert the book.
But I’m not sure if the characters will be cool with the switch. So I’ve decided this is what I’m going to do. I’ll do a Kate version and a Ruth version of the book and see which one feels more complete. I’ll do with the one that I am more excited about. This is what I had to do for Eye of the Beholder a couple years ago when I couldn’t decide whether to put sex in the book or not. It was crazy. I had the clean version and the sex version, and I went back and forth for a good two months before I settled on the sex version. I thought the story was 100% better with the sex in it. It wasn’t because I was a desperate housewife in need of excitement. I just felt that Mary and Dave’s relationship was enhanced when I explained their sex life. Sex is much more than the physical act. How the characters treat each other in the bedroom shows a lot in their emotional development. Some people will argue this point with me, but this is what I believe.
So I’ll work on two versions of Life Mate.
As for the Short Stories…
I am really excited about this one too. There are things that happened to my characters in their past, during the book, or even after the book that I’d like to share but could never think of a way to do this. I already have a first draft blog, and I tend not to write 1000 to 2000 word short stories about my characters. Then Stephannie Beman came up with the idea of doing an ezine at this link: http://passionloveandsex.wordpress.com/. Now, Stephannie’s the one who has done all that work on the blog. I can’t take credit for that. It’s just the two of us and our pen names who are on this blog. I’d still like to keep Kate Page. It’s just a matter of what to do with Life Mate that is my dilemma.
Anyway, someone already told me she’d like to have a short story on Troy Evans (John’s brother in Loving Eliza who tried to rape Eliza) and why he turned out so bitter about John. So I am working on an idea for a short story to explain that.
If anyone else has any characters they’ve ever wondered about to get a better understanding of them, let me know and I’ll see if something will develop.
Someone has emailed me in the past about doing more with Justin and Carrie from The Cold Wife, and I thought this might be a good way of doing that. Perhaps insert an extra scene or two from their perspective during An Inconvenient Marriage or why they adopted again after they adopted Ryan. They weren’t able to have any children of their own, though I never got to explain that in The Cold Wife.
So there are little tidbits I know but could never get into with the book, and I think these short stories will be a great way to bring those up. 😀 I’m really excited about it. It was Joleene Naylor who does her Vampire Morsels (you can find the first one for free on Smashwords at this link: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/41589) who gave me the idea of even doing the short stories. So you can see what Joleene did here and get an idea of what I’m talking about, if you wish.
The first ezine will be out April 1st! I’ll be sure to post when it’s up. Currently, I’m thinking of doing a scene from Julia’s past (before Restoring Hope). I was also thinking of doing a scene from Chogan’s point of view in Restoring Hope when he fell in love with Julia. However, if I get other requests, I’ll work on those instead. One thing about self-publishing is that I can listen to what you want to read, and these short stories will be a great way to do that. 😀
Oh, in a year or so, I’ll combine the short stories into a collection of short stories so eventually, I’ll have them available on places like Kindle. For now, they might just go up on Smashwords and the Passion, Love & Sex Ezine blog, but we’ll see.
