Nelly's Mail Order Husband for website

Valentine Silverton has enjoyed comfort and luxury his entire life. Then, all at once, the family fortune vanishes, and he’s a pauper. The only recourse he has is to find a wealthy heiress. But he doesn’t want to just find just any wealthy heiress. He wants to find one he can fall in love with. Since there are no suitable prospects in his area, he takes his friend’s advice and becomes a mail-order husband.

Nelly Larson grew up on a farm, and she loves everything about it. She loves the life so much, in fact, that she got her own homestead. The last thing she wants is to be strapped to one of the men in town who think her place is in the kitchen. She’s going to keep her independence, and keeping her independence will require her to avoid marriage at all costs.

Nelly’s sisters, however, can’t believe Nelly will truly be happy if she doesn’t get married. Romance, after all, is one of life’s most wonderful experiences. When they come upon Valentine’s ad, they know he’ll be perfect for her. So they take matters into their own hands and answer his ad on Nelly’s behalf.

Valentine thinks Nelly is the one answering his ad, and at once, he’s intrigued by her. He has no idea what a homestead is, but he assumes that a young woman who owns land and runs her own business must have lots of money. Excited, he runs off to Omaha to marry her.

The day comes when the two meet, and it’s at that time they realize they’ve been set up. Since Valentine has no money, he can’t leave Omaha. He has to marry Nelly. Even if she doesn’t have much, she has a place to live and food to eat. In exchange for marriage, he promises Nelly he won’t hinder her independence. Thankfully, she agrees to marry him.

But Valentine kind of likes Nelly, and he’s determined to show her that some things are worth giving up total independence for…and love just happens to be one of them.

What happens after the happy ending?

Usually, once the characters have their happy ending, there’s no more to say to their story. With Dave and Mary Larson, however, Eye of the Beholder was just the beginning. To Have and To Hold was the continuation. Forever Yours will offer the conclusion to their romance.

Up to now, Dave has always been a pillar of strength, and time after time, he’s helped Mary overcome her insecurities. But even the strong have moments of weakness…

After falling off a horse, Dave is unable to do the things he’s used to. He has to sit around and watch while everyone does things he used to take for granted. Worse, his older brother turns into a celebrity in town when the newspaper takes a sudden interest in him. When Dave thinks of what he has, it doesn’t seem like he’s accomplished much of anything at all.

What, exactly, is the value of a husband and a father? And how can a wife help her husband when he doubts himself?

This book features Richard, Tom, Sally, Jenny, and Joel and their families.

It is also approximately 47,000 words long.

Coming 2020

The Duke's Secluded Bride ebook cover

(Note: This description is a work in progress)

Most gentlemen wait to get married because they want time to enjoy being a bachelor before taking on the responsibilities of a married gentleman. Baldwin Darby, the Duke of Edmondstone, isn’t one of them. The life of a rogue never appealed to him. He’s wanted nothing more than to fall in love and live a quiet and uneventful life ever since he could remember. It wasn’t by choice that he hasn’t married yet. He’s just not very comfortable around ladies, which makes the marriage mart difficult for him.

So when his acquaintance mentions a sister at his country estate who is ready for marriage, he jumps at the chance for an arranged marriage. He’s been told she is extremely shy and that it takes her time to open up around strangers, so he might find her a bit strange when he initially meets her. But this doesn’t bother him. He’s a patient gentleman and can give her time to get used to him.

What he doesn’t count on, however, is just how strange everything is when he gets to the country estate. There were many things his acquaintance had left out, and it’ll leave him wondering if he made a mistake in marrying a lady without getting the chance to know her first.

*This is loosely based off the Rapunzel fairy tale.

  1. I am so looking forward to reading your new books, I can hardly wait for you to finish with them. Thank you so much.

  2. I am waiting for “Wagon Trail Bride” more than the others. I have been dying to read Richard and Amanda’s story. I have read all the other “Larson” stories. When that one comes out, I will read it, then all the others in that series, again. I have read each of them twice already, but I do love your books. I will be buying each book, as they are available, as I do love your books, in general. When I get bored with other books, I go back and re-read an entire series of yours. I generally find that I actual don’t recall everything from the last time read, so I do get enjoyment re-reading your series.

    • I’m hoping to have “Wagon Trail Bride” out this year. Part of the hold up has been what Amanda has to go through in the book. It’s hard for me to hurt a character. Richard doesn’t hurt her. Someone else does. Richard is the one who steps in to rescue her. But I’ve really had to struggle with letting the story go in the direction it needs to. I’ve tried to come up with other scenarios that were better for her but none of them worked. I’m finally biting the bullet and letting the story develop as it needs to. The book has a happy ending, of course, and Richard will be good to Amanda. It’s just been hard getting through the bad to get to the good. I wish I could say more but I don’t want to spoil it. I will try to spend more time on it. I’d like to get the story completed. 😀

Many thanks for the compliment. 😀 I’m very touched you keep reading my books. That means a lot to me.

  3. Love the Larson series and really waiting for His Convenient Wife 🙂

  4. Hi Ms. Nordin! I can’t get enough of Dave Larson and John Evans. I think I’ll seriously consider living in the prairie (and taking a bath only once a week, using cow chips when cooking, or yikes – even making do with an outhouse) if it means I get to be married with a man like them.

P.S. This note is actually intended to coerce you into writing more books about them. I’ll happily read dozens of books that just feature Dave working on the farm, Mary cooking, and the two of them unwinding together. But if you’re too busy, I guess re-reading (for the third time — this month!) Eye of the Beholder and Loving Eliza is not too big a hardship. 😉

    • LOL I would love to go live in that time period. I know there’s a lot of comforts I’d have to give up, but I’d do it to be treated like heroines like Mary and Eliza.

I’ve thought of doing a serial (like a TV mini-series or TV episodes) with Dave and Mary for shorter stories. I know some authors do stuff like TV Seasons and really make them long, but I would try to limit my series to 3-4 episodes and be done with it. I don’t like things to drag on forever. I have the beginning of an idea in my head but am not sure how I would proceed with it. That’s been the hold up on that idea.

I am also anxiously awaiting Richard and Amanda’s story. I hope we hear more about Ma and Pa Larson in it as well. I reread the stories over and over and have delighted in reading some of the children’s stories ie Rachel, Issac and Emily. Please keep up the good works

    • I plan to get to Richard and Amanda’s story next year. I think I figured out why the first attempt at writing it didn’t work. I think I started it too early. I think what I need to do is start them out on the wagon trail instead of in New York. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t transition them from New York to the trail. Hopefully by starting the book later, it’ll dislodge that weird writer’s block. 😀

I’m glad you like the Larsons! I do plan to have Harriett Larson’s book out later this year. That one is His Convenient Wife. Now, that one was just fine where it started. 😀 So I expect no problems there.

  6. Anonymous says:

I love reading your books and so glad to finally read Richard and Amanda’s story. I am, however, wondering if you will continue with the Wild Hearts Series? Will you continue writing the Rancher’s Wife? Thank you!

    • I hope Richard and Amanda were worth the wait. 🙂 It was so hard to know what to do with those two. They were easy to work with once I knew what to do, but for the longest time, I had no idea where to go with the story.

Unfortunately, I am so swamped with books, I don’t have the time to co-write another one, and Stephannie Beman wants to make it a 4 book series. I decided to let her take the rest of the series, so she’ll be writing The Rancher’s Wife and other books she has planned. She has some interesting twists and turns she has for that series. It’ll be fun to see where she takes things. 🙂 Here’s her site if you want to stay updated on the series or contact her about it: http://stephanniebeman.com

  7. Cathi says:

Hi Ruth – I have always been an ardent Barbara Cartland reader and with that I’ve been hooked in Regency books. My problem is they are only releasing 3 books a month. I got tired of re-reading each book until the next 3 came out. So – I started looking around for another author to keep me happy in between the release of her books. What I found was another Regency author who writes books that I really love. In just a very short time I have read all of your Regency book series published to date. I absolutely LOVE the continuation of all the same characters with each book featuring a few characters to really get to know them. I am so happy I went looking for another authoress.
    Thank you.

    • Hi Cathi! Your comment means a lot to me. I wish I could convey how much this has touched me. And thank you for letting me know you enjoy the continuation I use in the series. I originally thought of dividing up the series with all different characters, but the whole thing with the book poor Lord Edon has to keep handing out and the drama at White’s between the gentlemen was too fun to give up. I plan to keep up with the continuation in the upcoming Regencies. I don’t think I’ll ever leave that particular world and the characters.

Thank you, Cathi. Really, you’ve blessed me so much with your kind words. I wish I could adequately convey how touched I am. 🙂
