My books are not for everyone. That’s why I thought I’d take the time to create this page for easy reference. I would like to warn you ahead of time what kind of writer I am. That way you don’t waste your time reading my stuff.
The genres I write:
Essentially, I write romance. I mostly stick with Regencies and historical westerns, though I have dabbled with contemporary. I have done fantasy and thrillers in the past, but I rarely ever have story ideas of those genres. So I mainly stick with romance.
Character types you’ll often find me write:
Most of my characters are virgins. I started writing this trope because I found so little of it in my search in the past and thought, “Someone needs to write this.” Most of the time, you’ll find both hero and heroines to be virgins. However, there are some plots (like the widow/widower with a child) that require a non-virgin. Or perhaps, there is a character who isn’t a virgin who is looking for a second chance at personal redemption.
My heroes are primarily betas. The few alphas I write are on the gentle side. This might make some view my heroes as “weak”, but I view them as mentally and emotionally strong. They don’t rely on being forceful to get their way. The heroines can be feisty at times. They aren’t afraid to speak their mind. This rubs some people the wrong way. I guess it’s because the hero is often a beta. But honestly, I don’t think the woman is so strong that she overpowers the hero. (However, your opinion might differ on this point.) I guess we’ll just boil this down to the fact that I am the Type A personality in my marriage whereas my husband is the Type B personality type. Real life, I guess, does pop up in fiction despite our best intentions.
The types of romances I write:
I write the man-and-woman type heterosexual romances, and all of my characters have sex within marriage.
My romances don’t always have “angst” between the characters, though some certainly do. Most of the time, they get along but have to deal with some outside force in order to build a solid foundation for their relationship.
I will sometimes bring in my Christian faith into the stories. My aim is not to be preachy, but if there is something in the character development or a certain plot point that requires me to bring something from the Bible to the forefront, I will do that. I do in a way that I try to mesh well with the storyline so as not to pull you out of the book. My goal is to tell a story, not to give a sermon.
Heat Level:
My romances are typically spicy. I average about two sex scenes in a story, but sometimes I only do one or more than two. It all boils down to the plot and the characters. I only have two romances that have no sex in them. Those are Romancing Adrienne and Perfectly Matched.
I am not truly “authentic” to the language of the time period I write.
My books do tend to come off as being a little on the modern side. I have improved over the years, but I am not like other authors. If you prefer a “Jane Austen” experience you will not like my books. Also, some people may find me lacking with my historical western vernacular. I could stick mainly with contemporaries, but I love the historical western time period setting. I also fell in love with my Regency characters. If I hadn’t fallen in love with Lord Edon and Mr. Christopher Robinson, I would have ended my Regencies with the Marriage by Scandal Series. As for the historical westerns, I was a goner after writing Eye of the Beholder.
Why don’t I just “not” publish my books since I don’t seem to be “serious” about the business side of writing?
I mainly write for myself. For those who actually enjoy my books, it’s icing on the cake for me, and I certainly do appreciate their encouragement and support. That all being said, even if no one were to read my books, I would read them.
I spent years as a teenager and in college looking for certain books to read but could never find the exact setup that I wanted. I had certain characters in mind and wanted to read certain plots. When it became possible to publish my own stuff so I could finally read my stuff on an eReader and to get them in paperback, I rushed to do that. It was so much easier than lugging my notebook or computer around all the time. Now that I listen to audiobooks a lot, I am putting them in audio format.
It’s okay if you decide your books aren’t for me. I’m not doing this for the money. My goal is to have books I want to read in the future. Like I said above, though, if any of you happen to enjoy the books, that’s icing on the cake.
Thanks for taking the time to read this page. I hope it helps you figure out if these books are for you or not.
