I’m in the Process of Publishing To Have and To Hold to Barnes and Noble

I just opened a PubIt account with Barnes and Noble, and right now I’m having someone format To Have and To Hold for me.  I tried formatting it on my own, but things were off, so I hired someone to do it.  After fighting with formatting my Word document for two hours, I gave up.  LOL

I hate not using Smashwords for B&N, but recent developments over there has pretty much forced my hand.  You see, Smashwords was recently told to remove certain erotica books from their site because PayPal will shut off their business with Smashwords if they don’t.  It’s a long story, and I don’t want to go into it on this blog.

But what this means is that Smashwords is busy sorting through their book catalogue to remove the books PayPal doesn’t want for sale on Smashwords.   And since Smashwords is busy doing this, it doesn’t have the time to approve my upload of To Have and To Hold for premium distribution.  The people working at Smashwords are only human, after all.  So I decided I’d better go to PubIt and upload To Have and To Hold myself.

When To Have and To Hold is available on Barnes and Noble, I’ll let you know.

Once you go PubIt, you never go back… LOL

I use PubIt for six of my seven books (it used to be all seven, but following a price drop, I went SW) and I have to tell you, I love it. Their record keeping/reports are 100x better than KDP. I think you’ll like it. Oddly enough, SW has forced my hand, too, and starting with my next book, I will be publishing to Apple’s iBooks directly.

    • If I could make the upload work so I didn’t have a repeating chapter and two odd page breaks, I’d be set, but as it is, that isn’t fit for uploading and no amount of unformatting and reformatting has worked. I’ve just wasted a whole day doing this. I think I’m forced to stick with Smashwords.

Umm, did you just use their previewer or did you read it on your NOOK? Sometimes the previewer shows errors that aren’t really there. For me, it’s usually missing indentions.

I’ve never had any sort of problems with their formatting, ever. In fact, I use the same doc for AMZ, SW and B&N. If you want to send it to me, I’ll put it in OO and see if I can fix it.

        • It was just the previewer. What program do you use to look at it as an Epub file? I only know how to convert documents to mobi.

I need to see if it’s up on B&N yet and check it out, though I admit I’m almost afraid to. Sometimes it’s easier to think it uploaded fine.

  2. I’m sorry you’re caught up in that hassle, but glad you’re giving PubIt a try.

    • Right now I hate PubIt. Kindle and Smashwords gave me no problems, but PubIt is. Chapter 18 repeats itself and odd page breaks show up, and I had someone help me. We even unformatted everything and went back in to format again.

  3. I always go through PubIt. I had some titles through Smashwords until PubIt was available. The funny thing is, neither Smashwords nor B & N will take down the Smashwords versions, so some of my books are on there twice. LOL.

Has PubIt changed their formatting requirements? I just uploaded a Word document each time and they formatted it for me..

    • I don’t know what’s going on, but I can’t get the thing to work right. I even paid someone to format it who had no trouble with her books. Chapter 18 repeats and I have odd page breaks mid-chapter. I’m deleted the title from the dashboard and think I’ll just wait for Smashwords. I wasted a whole day going in circles.

Thanks for letting us know Ruth. I was wondering where it was hiding 😉

    • I shouldn’t have spoken so soon. All day I’ve been trying to upload it and chapter 18 repeats twice (no matter how many time me and the person helping me verify chatper 18 is only in the book once), and page breaks take place at the wrong places. I think I’m stuck with Smashwords.

  5. I think it’s just the preview screen being an a-s-s. I’d upload it and then have a look at it when it comes out at B&N. I don’t think the problem will be there.
